Connecticut Foliage Drive 2017

Time to take a side road
It's late to be going on a foliage drive in Connecticut, but that's the kind of year it's been. Gypsy moth damage followed by drought and unusually warm weather has had everyone wondering what kind of foliage we would have this fall. The answer - spotty and late.

Love the layering of yellow, orange and red
I prefer overcast days for foliage drives. It tends to make the colors pop more, sometimes appearing fluorescent.

We planned to do a Connecticut River loop. Starting on 82 East, we turned south on Rt. 156. We took a few side trips, then crossed the river on I-95S. At exit 69 we turned north on Rt. 154, took a few more side trips and then crossed the river again on Rt. 82 West. We stopped for lunch at what is fast becoming one of our favorite  spots, Two Wrasslin' Cats Cafe in East Haddam. Then continued toward home.

Where will this road lead?
Our annual foliage drives bring out the explorer in me! Hmmmm...I've always wondered what is down that road? Time to find out!

A secluded beach on the Connecticut River
It was well worth the detour! What a gem of a discovery this was! Scenic and serene, it was tempting to pull out the beach chairs and stay for awhile, but our mission was to find foliage views so on we pushed.

In Old Saybrook, the foliage continued to be spotty. Loads of color in some areas, loads of green and bare trees in others. Very strange for late October, but everyone we talked to along the way said it was the same in Massachusetts and Vermont.

Couldn't resist another side road! This one lead past a pond littered with fallen leaves.

Our next side trip was to the charming little town of Essex, where Halloween surprises were in store!
A blaze of red surrounds the pond
Every lamp post in town was decorated for Halloween!

Community spirit is evident as Essex really gets into the Halloween theme.

The homeowners on historic main street do it up brilliantly, making Essex a favorite tourist destination.

You never know who will greet you next
Historic homes, peek through views of the harbor, and Halloween humor!

Boil, boil, toil and trouble!
And then there's the foliage we set out to find!

Deep orange
Did I mention every lamp post is decorated? I could have written a blog on that alone!

We were too early for lunch at the historic Griswold Inn, so we continued on taking a few more stops along the way, and taking a lunch break before heading home.

Ironically, as is often the case, we found some of the best foliage back home in Oakdale...

Old Colchester Road, Oakdale, CT
and in our own back yard. I've moved my usual spot at the kitchen table to another chair where I can enjoy this beauty at each meal.
I love the red leaves on the pathway and the yellow underling the red tree.
It's October 30th today, and the foliage season isn't over yet. I intend to take it all in and enjoy every moment of life in New England!

Wadsworth Atheneum

The Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Connecticut
Free Museum Day was September 23rd, and you can bet I did not miss out! The Wadsworth Atheneum is one of my favorite destinations, add in free and its a no brainer! The Wadsworth pulled out all the stops for this event. A chalk artist on the front steps, and a band greeting visitors by the front door. But that's not all! Inside, tables and craft supplies were set up to encourage children (and adults) to create their own works of art. I saw a few children carrying their cardboard guitars with pride! My favorite extra - a Latin band performing in one of the galleries! I danced with security guards and other visitors all the way through my tour of the museum! Art and music - a winning combination!

While in Hartford, be sure to walk around. You'll find great architecture and nature everywhere! I packed a lunch for the ultimate freebie day, but on other occasions I've dined at the Museum's Cafe, and highly recommend it. You'll also find plenty of restaurants and food trucks! Enjoy this wonderful city!
Its easy to find greenery in Hartford!

Hammonassett Beach State Park

Hammonassett Beach State Park
Inhale......Ahhhh the smell of salt air
Sandals off ....Ahhhh the feel of soft cool sand between my toes
Eyes closed.... Ahhhh the cool breeze and warm sun on my face
Ears open....Ahhh the sound of seagulls enjoying morning on the shore
Eyes open... Ahhh the beautiful views of the beach and Long Island Sound
Lean back, neck tilted upward...Ahhhh clouds
Imagination open....Ahhhhh I see a hummer moth, fields of organic crops, and flying whales
This is retirement on a Wednesday morning!

Two miles of beach to meander along
Shells to search for
Views to enjoy
A handful of people
Accessible walkways
Accessible beach prevents erosion
Views everywhere
Blue skys and clouds
Picturesque pathways
Boardwalks behind the dunes

A place to rest and...
Some shade for lunch
Pavilion artwork...

to enjoy on your way to the restroom

This is all I need in life.
This is Hammonassett Beach State Park.

A Wee Faerie Village

What fun I had at Faerieville, U.S.A.! Located on the grounds of the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, CT, the tiny village is open September 30th - October 29th this year. Admission includes entry to the museum as well as a map of the village with scavenger-hunt-type-questions at each numbered stop. Built by volunteers, each faerie garden has its own theme and design. It's a great way to meet people as everyone takes joy in discovering the hunted item! I took more photos than seems reasonable, but I wanted to remember it all. I'll share a few of my favorites with you today.

Some are in trees.
The Sugar Crumb Faerie Bakery - Jessica Zydeek

Some are small.
Wee Free Faerieville Public Library - John and Leslie Keogh

Some are large.
Underwater Academy For Seafaeries - Students from Deep River Elementary School Led by Art Teacher Diana DeWolf-Carfi
There are beautiful views everywhere.
Lieutenant River, Old Lyme, CT

And every so often you spot  some faeries!
Adorable!

Instead of paintings of water lilies, you'll find paintings on water lilies!
The Not-So-Metropolitan Museum of Wee Faerie Art - Natalie O'Brien and Fifth Grade Class of Pleasant Valley Elementary School, South Windsor, CT

Look carefully, and among the flowers you'll find a village.
Perennial gardens at the FloGris

An old window creates a backdrop for shoppers.
Flora & Feathers Vintage Fashion Boutique - Kristen Thornton

Need more plant ideas for your garden? Visit the local botanical garden's greenhouse.

Plant Palace - Dee Dee Charnok, Teddi Curtiss, Bobbie Padgett, and Gay Thorn

The doors  open wide, welcoming all at the  chapel.
The Bark Barrow Chapel - Katie Scarlett Faile and Erik Faile

A pine cone lid for this greens covered teapot that steams white feathers from its spout!
Tilly's Tea Room - Cheryl Poirier, Lisa Reneson, and Tammi Flynn

Some gardens were created almost entirely from natural materials. Can you spot the tiny box of popcorn?
Frolic-In Movie Theater - Adam Pipkin and Erica Sunshine

Some were cleverly crafted of odds and ends.
All Pro Automotive of Faerieville - Dave Graybill

Of course when your Faerie Village is in Old Lyme, there must be an art studio...
Shoreline Academy Of The Arts - Shelby Chadwick

... and an antique shop.
Birtwistle Antiques - Mary Ann Besier, Rudi Besier, Kurt Besier, and Edie Twining

Oh there's more, much more! But that would spoil all your fun when you go to visit A Wee Faerie Village!
